Naturalization & Citizenship

Naturalization & Citizenship Lawyers in Sacramento

Citizenship in the United States offers excellent benefits to immigrants and their families. Upon becoming a naturalized citizen, an immigrant earns the right to sponsor relatives who may still be in the country of origin. Citizens have access to more government programs, particularly those that help with higher education. Becoming a U.S. citizen also allows one to vote in all elections — local, state, and federal. Our Sacramento naturalization and citizenship attorneys welcome the opportunity to help immigrants through the process.

Eligibility for U.S. Citizenship

Once an immigrant has held permanent residency (green card) for five years, they can apply for naturalization. The period can be shortened to three years in the event of marriage to a current citizen.

In many cases, a person’s eligibility status is easily determined, but there can be some gray areas. For example, if someone was born outside of the United States, but their parents are citizens, our Sacramento naturalization and citizenship lawyers will need to verify how long the parents were living in the U.S.

The Citizenship Process

An applicant will submit Form I-400. If an immigrant has served in the United States Armed Forces, that service can be documented with Form I-426. A personal interview with immigration officials will be necessary. Applicants are allowed to have their lawyer present to ensure their rights are protected and that protocol is followed.

Furthermore, our office can help prepare clients for the written examination that will follow. Applicants will be tested on both their knowledge of the English language and of U.S. civics.

Free Consultations

The naturalization process is straightforward, but it is still filled with paperwork, and the possibility for misunderstandings always exists. That’s why legal counsel can be so valuable in helping immigrants find their way to full U.S. citizenship. We want to help because we’ve been in those shoes before.
