San Francisco Files Suit Over Sanctuary City Order

San Francisco Files Suit Over Sanctuary City Order

San Francisco was the first city to file suit against Trump challenging the constitutional of his order withholding federal funding for sanctuary cities, allegedly in the name of public safety. In the suit, the city requests an injunction preventing implementation of Trump’s order. San Francisco normally receives about $1.2 billion in federal funding, but it is unclear how much of this funding would be at risk under the Trump order. Not only would the Trump order directly impact funding for San Francisco, but it would put hundreds of other sanctuary cities and localities at risk of losing funding. In San Francisco and other sanctuary communities, there are strict limits on the ability of local law enforcement agencies to assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. San Francisco became a sanctuary city in 1989 and is home to an estimated 30,000 immigrants who have no legal status. City officials claim that requiring them to essentially become immigration agents not only violates the state and federal constitution, but makes their city less safe. They argue that immigrants will be less likely to cooperate with the police out of fear of repercussions for their lack of legal status. Trump seized on the well-known 2015 murder of a San Francisco woman by an immigrant with no legal status as illustrative of the dangers of sanctuary cities. The convicted murderer previously had been deported five times and had a criminal record. San Francisco government officials, however, point out that its citywide sanctuary policy does not affect its cooperation with federal immigration agents regarding felons. While San Francisco and other similar communities are taking legal steps to protect their sanctuary city status, it is clear that there are many individuals and families who are vulnerable to deportation charges, regardless of where they live.
