On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of DHS announced a policy that certain people who came to the U.S. as children and meet several other requirements may request consideration of “deferred action” for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are eligible for work authorization, a driver's license, and social security number. Those who unlawfully entered the U.S. as children are known as "DREAMers".

The Trump Administration attempted to terminate the program. However, several lawsuits were filed challenging the way the Trump Administration went about that.

UPDATE: On July 2021, a Texas federal judge ruled that the U.S. can no longer accept new applications for the DACA program. Requests that were approved before July 16, 2021 will not be affected and individuals will continue to have DACA status and will be eligible to renew DACA and DACA work permits.
