L.A. County Supervisors Create Immigrant Assistant Office

L.A. County Supervisors Create Immigrant Assistant Office

Just prior to the inauguration, the L.A. County Supervisors held a meeting to create an immigration division, i.e. the Office of Immigrant Affairs, in order to protect residents without legal status. The move was designed to help counter any policies that the Trump administration might enact that would threaten the protection of these residents. Only one of the five supervisors voted against the measure creating the immigration office, which will be located in the County’s Department of Consumer and Business Affairs. For the most part, existing county offices provide services to individuals regardless of their immigration status, including medical care and public school education. The goal of the office is to assist undocumented immigrants seeking help. One supervisor indicated that the office would help immigrants find legal representation for those involved in deportation proceedings, and to help connect individuals and families with any other available social services. L.A. County hopes to create a budget and staffing plan by April of this year, with the intent being to get the office operational by the end of 2017. Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell appeared to support the creation of the office. He promised that pursuant to department policy, county deputies would not initiate any police activity or arrest anyone solely based on his or her immigration status. In 2015, the LASD did begin working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) so that the most violent inmates could be detained for ICE and then deported. Still, McDonnell claims that these detainers affected less than 1,200 of the estimated 120,000 individuals released from county jails in 2016.
