Are You Facing Immigration Court Alone?

Are You Facing Immigration Court Alone?

If you or a family member faces removal from the U.S. for your immigration status, you may end up in court alone. Many immigrants in removal proceedings lack access to an attorney, particularly one who is experienced in immigration law. Going into court alone does not mean you have to go into court uninformed. You can prepare yourself in advance using resources from the Vera Institute of Justice.

The Institute offers:

  • One-on-one meetings with a staff person, where you can talk about your particular circumstances.
  • Self-help workshops designed to help immigrants who do not have an attorney.
  • Group information sessions by a staff person, held to provide basic information about the court process and on defenses against removal.
  • A legal resources library with materials in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Bengali, Chinese, French, and Somali.

The Institute has offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and San Antonio. It partners with other agencies across the country. You can find a list on their website.

At Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C., we provide over 200 free video tutorials on our YouTube channel. Most are available in Spanish, as well as English.

Resource libraries, videos and workshops cannot replace the work of a qualified immigration attorney. Immigrants facing deportation fare better with an immigration attorney. A study released in 2016 estimated that those with legal representation were twice as likely to obtain relief as those without it.

Don’t wait until you are in immigration court to learn how it works. You can learn in advance what to expect, what questions the judge will ask and what papers to bring. Arm yourself with information for your fight to stay in America. If you are in immigration court, please feel free to call our office at (510) 756-4468 to see how our immigration court attorneys can help you!
