5 Reasons Why We Need Immigrants in The Military

There was little attention paid at first when the Pentagon began discharging immigrants from the Army. The Associated Press ran a story in July 2018 revealing the practice. Now the Army has changed course and reinstated some.

Here are just a few of the benefits the U.S. gains from our non-citizens willing to take the risk of service even when it means they may have to put their lives on the line:

  1. Non-citizens who join the U.S. military add many needed skills. As our global presence has shifted it has created a need for people who speak certain languages, including Pashto, Farsi, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese
  2. Our military is having a hard time filling its manpower needs. The Army in general has netted no new recruits in 2018 despite a goal of 8,000. Historically, about 8,000 non-citizens join per year.
  3. They are far more likely to complete their enlistment obligations successfully. Non-citizens who have served for at least 36 months are 9 to 20 percent less likely to leave the service than white citizens. Long term service means our soldiers have more experience.
  4. They contribute significantly to our economy, buying homes and other goods. Many go on to start businesses and create new jobs.
  5. They add greater racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity than citizen recruits. While some may see that as a negative the U.S. military does not, as explained on its website.

The irony of the Trump Administration’s unlimited goal to deport non-citizens is harming our military readiness. There is plenty of evidence that non-citizens boost the U.S. economy in many ways, and now we must acknowledge we need them in our military.
