- Group Orientation provides an overview of immigration removal proceedings and forms of relief that may allow you to stay in the U.S. Participants can ask general questions during the session.
- You may also be able to obtain an Individual Orientation, where you can describe your personal case with experienced LOP providers and ask questions that are specifically relevant to you.
- You can also use Self-help Workshops for guidance on specific topics (such as how to complete an asylum application or prepare for a bond hearing). This can include self-help legal materials that can help you if you must represent yourself in court as a last resort.
- LOP can provide a referral to free Legal Services, where they are available
The
Legal Orientation Program
(LOP) has been in the news recently after the U.S. Department of Justice
announced it was “pausing” the program. Then, in late April,
Attorney General Jeff Sessions reported the program has been reinstated.
LOP is a free service that can help anyone coping with the immigration system.
The Vera Institute for Justice
provides LOP services directly and by referring people to other non-profit
agencies. You can use LOP information about immigration court procedures,
so you have a better idea of what to expect before you appear in court.
You can learn other basic legal information about how the immigration
system works and what options you may have. The program has four components.
You can use any of them you need.
