Immigrants Far Less Likely to Commit Serious Crimes Than American Citizens

According to a recent article by Immigration Impact, a project of the American Immigration Council, more than 100 years of research has firmly established that immigrants are far less likely to commit serious crimes than native-born Americans. This is despite claims to the contrary by those firmly opposed to the presence of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Immigration critics claim that since undocumented immigrants committed the crime of entering the country with no legal immigration status, they are all criminals, and therefore dangerous. They also claim that since there are some undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes, fewer undocumented immigrants would lead to fewer serious criminals in the U.S. These claims, however, are simply unsupported by the empirical research. Plus, the elimination of any group of people from the U.S., whether it is short men or women with blond hair, would result in fewer criminals in the U.S.; this argument does not address the lower rate at which immigrants commit crimes, as opposed to natives of the U.S. Some very recent studies only have served as further proof of the lack of correlation between undocumented immigrants and serious crime. A 2017 study showed that undocumented immigration was significantly associations with reductions in certain crimes, including drug arrests, drug overdose deaths, and DUI arrests between 1990 and 2014. Another recent study showed no relationship between undocumented immigration and the rates of violent crime. Likewise, a 2014 study found that immigrants are less likely to exhibit violent or nonviolent antisocial behaviors than individuals who were born in the U.S. At Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C., we have represented the interests of countless clients in the state of California who are facing deportation proceedings, but whose goal is to remain with their families in the United States.
