How to Spot a Scam Artist Who Targets Immigrants

A recent Chicago Tribune article details the story of one woman and her family who were scammed out of more than $10,000 by a scam artist who promised immigration protections that the family was not even eligible to receive. Unfortunately, scams of this nature are all too common in the immigrant community. So-called “notario fraud” occurs when a scam artist targets immigrants with no legal status and who are unlikely to report the illegal activity to authorities out of fear of deportation. Unlike most victims of these scams, however, Brandelia Nunez chose to report the scam to authorities; as a result, the Illinois attorney general’s office is now pursuing a civil lawsuit on behalf of Nunez and her family. According to the National Immigrant Justice Center, scam artists such as these often pose as lawyers or immigration “experts” who promise to help immigrants gain legal status. They tend to demand exorbitant upfront fees from victims before starting any work, and then either prepare false paperwork or simply disappear without ever delivering on their promises. The “notario publico” refers to a “prestigious lawyer” in Latin America, but in this country, a “notary public” is simply a witness to signatures, often on legal or financial documents. Scam artists often take advantage of the different meanings of the term in order to convince unknowing immigrants that they have the ability necessary to help them.
