Healthcare Coverage and Immigrant Parents

Healthcare Coverage and Immigrant Parents

Health care is an important issue that immigrants of all ages must face at one point or another. While the options for immigrant parents may be limited, there is coverage available in many situations. Additionally, even if you have no legal immigration status, you have the right to apply for coverage for your dependents who do have legal status. This means that you can apply for health insurance for your U.S. citizen children. First, immigrants with no legal status are not eligible to purchase insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace created through the Affordable Care Act, nor are they eligible for tax credits to help pay for premiums. Other types of immigrants, however, may be eligible to purchase coverage through the Marketplace, including lawful permanent residents, asylees, refugees, and various other classes of immigrants with certain statuses. Next, many colleges and universities require students to either show proof of insurance coverage or purchase a school health insurance policy. There are no questions about a student’s immigration status when he or she applies for this type of healthcare coverage. In relatively rare situations, an undocumented immigrant may take a job with a company that offers medical insurance benefits. Again, there is unlikely to be any questions about immigration status when signing up for this type of coverage. In the state of California, some Medi-Cal benefits are available for undocumented immigrants. These benefits include emergency care, pregnancy-related services, and state-funded long-term care. Although the Trump administration has announced an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, DACA recipients are entitled to Medi-Cal coverage. Furthermore, although services vary from one county to the next, there are a number of state health insurance programs that provide coverage, regardless of one’s immigration status. Healthcare coverage is something that Americans often take for granted, although it is a real problem for many immigrants. As immigration advocates continue to fight against enforcement measures taken by the federal government, we are here to help individuals who have been caught up in the net of immigration enforcement. Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C. is an Oakland immigration law firm who has dedicated their practice to protecting the interests of immigrants who are seeking to remain in the U.S. and facing potential deportation, whether due to a visa overstay or another reason.
