Recent ICE Arrests Don't Align with Trump's Immigration Priorities

A recent article in Mother Jones profiles immigrants who have been caught up in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown raids. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested immigrants, many of whom have lived and worked in the U.S. for years, at home, at work, and at check-ins with ICE officials. Even worse, many of those detained by ICE have no criminal history, which runs directly contrary to Trump’s campaign promises of focusing enforcement efforts on “bad hombres.” First, ICE arrested a 22-year-old Mississippi woman after she publicly criticized ICE for detaining her father and brother. Daniela Vargas was a participant in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2014, whereby she was protected from deportation, along with hundreds of other young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Her status in the DACA program expired last November, but Vargas had applied to renew her status. ICE officials arrested her anyway, and Vargas spent a week in detention before being released by ICE. Historically, ICE officials have avoided arresting immigrants at sensitive locations, such as churches, schools, and hospitals. Nonetheless, ICE arrested Sara Beltrán Hernández in late February while she was receiving treatment for a brain tumor in a Texas hospital. Beltrán Hernández previously spent 16 months in an immigrant detention facility awaiting a decision on her asylum claim. After immigration advocates intervened, ICE agreed to release the woman on bond so that she could continue treatment for her brain tumor. In another breach of the informal policy of avoiding immigration arrests in sensitive locations, ICE arrested a Mexican transgender woman in the El Paso, Texas courthouse after a court hearing. The woman had just been granted a protective order against her alleged abuser, as a victim of domestic violence.
