Metro Areas Hold Largest Concentration of Unauthorized Immigrants

A recent Pew Research Center report found that about 61%, or 6.8 million, of American’s estimated 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants are concentrated in just 20 major metropolitan areas. This is despite the fact that only 36% of the total U.S. population live in those same areas. The largest populations of immigrants live in New York, Los Angeles, and Houston; furthermore, immigrants without legal status tend to live in the same areas as lawful immigrants, including naturalized citizens. A full 65% of lawful immigrants live in the same 20 metropolitan areas as unauthorized immigrants. The New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas overwhelmingly have the largest populations of immigrants without legal status with 1.2 million and 1 million, respectively. None of the other 18 metropolitan areas has even close to a million of these immigrants. The smallest unauthorized immigrant populations of these 20 metropolitan areas are located in Orlando, with 110,000 immigrants, and Austin, with 100,000 immigrants. Five of the top 20 metropolitan areas are in California, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose. Three of the top metropolitan areas are in Texas, including Houston, Dallas –Fort Worth, and Austin. The current allocation of unlawful immigrants in these metropolitan areas could change significantly, assuming that the Trump administration follows through with its executive order to strip federal funding from localities that have established themselves as “sanctuary jurisdictions.” However, mayors of many of these cities have vowed that they will not comply with the order, so the impact on the immigrant population is unclear at this point. Any large shift in immigrant populations would run counter to not only the current distribution of the population, but also to the distribution of the population over the past decade, which has remained largely consistent.
