ICE Raids Net 160 Arrests in Southern California

In the past few months, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have executed a number of immigration raids in several states as part of the administration’s vow to step up immigration enforcement actions. These raids included five days of sweeps in Southern California, which resulted in the arrests of 160 immigrants without legal status. While the federal government claims that the raids were intended to target criminals, many of those immigrants arrested in the raids had no criminal records at all. While there is evidence that that a violent gang member and drug trafficker were caught, there is also evidence that completely non-violent people were detained. In one instance, ICE agents looking for an immigrant with a criminal background ended up arresting another man who had no criminal history. In another example, a man dropping off his daughter at school was arrested and detained in front of a crowd of schoolchildren. These raids, in conjunction with recent executive orders, have increased anxiety among community members, particularly in those communities with large numbers of undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also report that federal immigration officials have been less forthcoming about immigration clients and are having difficulty accessing their clients in some cases. California government officials, including California gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa, have spoken out against the immigration raids and increased enforcement as unnecessarily creating a culture of fear in their state. Local government authorities and immigration advocates alike have stated that the federal government does not seem to be focusing on public safety concerns in its immigration raids and stepped-up enforcement, as it claims.
