ICE Operation Nets 112 Fugitives Across Southern California

According to a recent article, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained 112 immigrants in a six-county, four-day special operations raid in Southern California. Eighty-nine of the 112 detainees were from Mexico, seven were from El Salvador, and five were from Guatemala, with the remainder of the detainees coming from various countries across the world. ICE arrested 56 immigrants in Los Angeles County, 16 in San Bernardino County, and the other immigrants in Orange, Riverside, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties. The stated purpose of this special operation was to round up those whom ICE considered to be some of the most “serious offenders.” However, only approximately half of the individuals arrested had felony convictions for serious or violent offenses. The other half are now facing either removal proceedings or immediate deportation depending on their situation. Many of them are stuck in immigration detention. The vast majority of detainees are captured by ICE when local authorities arrest them locally for a criminal offense. However, depending on local practices, that law enforcement agency may or may not notify ICE to pick up the immigrant. In other cases, ICE may only get a few hours’ notice that an individual has been arrested. If ICE does not arrive to detain the individual in time, the law enforcement agency simply will release him or her.
