Syrian Refugee Family Settles into American Life

The United States’ Syrian refugee resettlement program, which now has been in place for a year, recently met its goal of taking in 10,000 Syrian refugees, more than a month prior to the expected date. San Diego, California, which is the country’s eighth-largest city, has taken in 626 Syrian refugees since October 1, 2015, which is more than any other U.S. city. There are other smaller cities who also have accepted outsized numbers of Syrian refugees, including Erie (205), Toledo (109), and Boise (108). Other cities who have accepted large numbers of refugees include Chicago, Glendale, Troy, and Dallas. The states of California and Michigan have accepted roughly equivalent numbers of Syrian refugees through the resettlement program. In most cases, one of the nine resettlement organizations nationwide tries to resettle refugees in cities in which they have friends or family. The alternative is to place the refugees in an established community of immigrants who share the refugees’ culture. For instance, in El Cajon, California, Syrian refugees are now joining a community with a large Iraqi immigrant population, in which some store signs are even in Arabic. An estimated five million Syrians have fled their country since 2011, most of whom have sought refuge in neighboring countries, such as Jordan, which currently has over 660,000 Syrian refugees. The U.S. resettlement program focuses on those Syrians who are most vulnerable, such as those who are sick or subject to violence or torture. The 10,000 Syrian refugees who have entered the U.S. through the resettlement program have done so after extensive vetting by the International Organization of Migration, the U.S. State Department, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The resettled Syrian refugees are only some of the many immigrants facing violence and torture in their home countries.
