Immigration Increase in Late Summer 2016

According to a recent Washington Times article, Border Patrol agents have reported a late summer surge in the number of immigrants crossing the border. Statistics show that such a massive influx of immigrants entering the United States in late summer is unusual, as border crossings typically slow down considerably at this time of year. The bulk of the surge appears to be families – primarily women and children – fleeing the violence and poverty that pervades Central American countries. In August alone, Border Patrol agents have caught almost 10,000 individuals traveling as families, which is a 24% increase over the prior month. Overall, in fiscal year 2016, Border Patrol agents have stopped more than 68,000 family units crossing the U.S. border. If these figures continue for the remainder of the fiscal year, it is likely that immigration rates will surpass the record-setting rates from 2014. The number of unaccompanied children caught crossing the border also continues to rise, with Border Patrol agents nabbing almost 5,800 children in August alone, and more than 54,000 children so far this year. While these statistics are lower than in 2014, the year in which the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border peaked, the data obviously shows that tens of thousands of children are illegally crossing the U.S. border each year. In some cases, adult immigrants are actually kidnapping children as they head north, so as to be able to pose as a family unit if caught crossing the border. These adults believe that the U.S. is treating family units more leniently than individuals traveling alone.
