U.S. Bishops Criticize Failed Immigration Policies

U.S. Catholic bishops have denounced planned increases in federal immigration raids as yet another indicator of the deficiencies in American immigration policy. As Seattle Auxiliary Bishop Eusebio L. Elizondo, which is chairman-elect of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Migration, points out, talk of increased immigration raids only instill panic in Catholic parishes. He further commented that individuals should not have to avoid school or church out of fear that they will be torn away from their families and returned to a country in which they are in danger. Repeated fear of immigration raids, the bishops allege, only make an already vulnerable population more susceptible to misinformation, fraud, and exploitation, as well as make immigrants even more distrustful of law enforcement. While U.S. bishops do recognize the federal government’s role in upholding federal immigration laws and policies, they also note cases in which mothers and children are being denied legal assistance and the right to pursue asylum claims. For instance, ICE personnel recently deported a mother and her 14-year-old daughter from a Texas detention center, despite the fact that the family feared being killed in their home country, their asylum claim had never been heard in court, and their attorneys had requested a stay of removal pending an appeal. Instead, ICE deported the mother and daughter without advising their attorneys that they had done so until after the fact. Another Texas bishop who spoke out against the recent increases in federal immigration raids noted that the federal government should not use children and families as pawns in an immigration system that is fundamentally broken and in need of repair. He believes that these individuals are being denied the most basic of human rights in fleeing violence, in that they receive no due process protections at all.
