More Jurisdictions Providing Legal Assistance for Immigrants Facing Deportation

As the Trump administration continues its unprecedented campaign of deportation for immigrants, the Vera Institute of Justice is making it possible for immigrants in 11 cities and counties to obtain legal representation in their deportation proceedings. All of the jurisdictions selected for the Safety and Fairness for Everyone (SAFE) Cities Network already have committed public funds to defending immigrants in deportation cases. The Vera Institute will match those public funds through a fund that the non-profit organization administers. The cities and counties included in the SAFE Cities Network include Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Columbus, OH, Dane County, WI, Oakland and Alameda County, CA, Prince George’s County, MD, Sacramento, San Antonio, and Santa Ana, CA. These cities and counties are joining a growing number of jurisdictions who specifically are devoting funds to immigrant defense in deportation cases, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City. The state of New York also has developed the first statewide immigrant defense fund. While these programs won’t enable all undocumented immigrants to remain in the country, they will definitely increase the odds of immigrants winning their deportation cases. The fact is that immigrants with legal representation, particularly when they are detained, are far more likely to be successful in deportation proceedings than those who represent themselves. Many cities and jurisdictions have met opposition in their efforts to provide legal assistance to undocumented immigrants. The Trump administration has sought to use any means necessary to call out “sanctuary cities” and attempt to deny them federal funds so as to force them into cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Likewise, some local officials have argued over attempts to discern between “good” and “bad” undocumented immigrants, in terms of which immigrants should receive legal representation. The skilled and knowledgeable immigration lawyers of Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C. are here to get detained immigrants released and defend them against removal from the country.
