Increases in Mexican Immigration, Contrary to Trends

As a whole, immigration from Mexico, whether legal or illegal, has slowed dramatically over the past several years. In 2004, about 380,000 U.S. residents had been living in Mexico just one year prior, but by 2014, that number had decreased by more than half, falling to 123,000. 2014 is the most recent year for which these statistics are available. In fact, in the majority of states, the number of Chinese and Asian immigrants easily outpaced Mexican immigrants in 2014. Researchers attribute this decreased rate of immigration from Mexico in large part to the 2008 recession, as well as an improved Mexican job market and a lower overall birth rate. Plus, the construction and manufacturing jobs that previously enticed Mexicans to come to the U.S. continue to be scarce. Nonetheless, in 2014, the state of Washington defied this trend by having the largest increase in one year of Mexican immigrants of any other state. More specifically, the number of Mexican immigrants who had been living in Mexico the prior year tripled between 2013 and 2014. U.S. census data does adjust these figures for the undercount, or those Mexican immigrants who do not participate in the census surveys. Some researchers believe that Mexican immigration to Washington state has increased due to a boom in agriculture, which has created a shortage of domestic farm laborers. For instance, the cherry season, which used to last one month, now lasts all summer. Record crops are in high demand, and growers are struggling to find workers to fill agriculture-related jobs. As a result, Mexican immigrants have helped fill this need.
