Fake Deportation Hearings Are Targeting Immigrants — Here’s How to Protect Yourself

At Landerholm Immigration, we’ve always known that immigrants face tremendous challenges—both from the legal system and from people looking to take advantage of their vulnerability. But what’s happening now goes beyond the usual fraud: scammers are creating entire fake court hearings on Zoom, tricking immigrants into missing their real hearings and paying thousands of dollars to criminals pretending to be lawyers and judges.

This is not just shocking—it’s dangerous.

The Scam: Fake Lawyers, Fake Hearings, Real Damage

A recent case out of New York highlights how far scammers are going. A man facing deportation found what he thought was a lawyer on Facebook. The so-called “attorney” reviewed his paperwork and later told him his immigration court hearing had been rescheduled as a virtual session on Zoom.

When the day came, the immigrant logged in—expecting to be heard by an immigration judge. What he got instead was a completely staged hearing: a fake judge, a fake immigration officer, and a fake lawyer. He was told he had “won” his case, but that in order to finalize everything, he needed to pay $900 in fees, plus $99 per page to certify his documents. In total, they tried to scam him out of over $8,000.

The worst part? Because he skipped his real hearing—under advice from the fake attorney—he was ordered deported in absentia.

Now, he not only lost his money, but also has a deportation order on his record.

Why This Is Happening More Often

Sadly, scams like this are becoming more common, especially during times of increased immigration enforcement. When people are afraid, they’re more likely to trust someone who promises to “fix everything” quickly. These scammers prey on that fear.

In New York City and other major immigrant hubs, reports of similar schemes have surged in 2024 and 2025. Technology has made it easier: now scammers don’t need a fake office—they can run the entire operation from a Zoom call.

How to Protect Yourself

Here at Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C., we want you to know how to recognize red flags and protect your rights. If you're looking for an immigration lawyer, here's what you need to do:

✅ Check Their Credentials

Never hire someone based solely on a Facebook group or social media ad. Real immigration attorneys are licensed and listed with their state’s bar association. You can verify our attorneys through the California State Bar website.

✅ Ask Questions

If someone promises you a guaranteed win, take a step back. Real lawyers don’t make promises—they give you an honest evaluation of your case.

✅ Be Skeptical of Pressure Tactics

If someone pressures you to pay quickly or outside normal legal channels—especially through apps like WhatsApp or Zelle—be cautious. A real attorney will have clear, secure, and transparent payment methods.

✅ Verify Your Court Information

You can check your own immigration hearing date through the EOIR Automated Case Information System. If someone tells you your hearing was moved or canceled, double-check yourself.

✅ Don’t Skip a Hearing Without Confirmation

If you’re told not to attend a scheduled hearing, verify it with the immigration court. Missing a hearing—even by accident—can lead to a removal order that is very difficult to undo.

If You’ve Been a Victim

There may be legal options. Victims of scams like this may qualify for a U visa, which is available to immigrants who’ve suffered substantial harm due to criminal activity and cooperate with law enforcement. However, it's essential to act quickly and consult with a real, experienced immigration attorney.

At Landerholm Immigration, we’re committed to fighting for immigrants who’ve been misled, misinformed, or mistreated. If you've been a victim—or if you simply need reliable, honest guidance for your immigration situation—we’re here to help.
