Immigration Rights Group Settles in for the Fight in D.C.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) has worked on behalf of immigrants in the U.S. since it was founded in 1986. Though it is based in California it has successfully advocated for immigration reform and fair treatment at the national level. In May, 2018 the agency opened an office in Washington D.C. so they have easier access to Capital Hill.

A legislator at CHIRLA’s ribbon cutting commented that “Opening up an office is more than opening up a door… it says we’re here, and we’re not going away.” (see article here.)

Many people who attended the event were immigrants or the children of immigrants who entered the country without proper documentation and had dedicated years of their lives to helping others. CHIRLA knows the Trump Administration is waging its war on immigrants with words like animals and criminals.

The Agency is dedicated to proving the Administration wrong with its own powerful weapon: the faces and stories of the real people these extreme actions will hurt. Now it can do it on the highest level in its new office just a few minutes away from the people who can change what’s happening.
