Oakland Mayor Warns Community of Impending ICE Raids

Prior to recent raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Bay Area, Mayor Libby Schaaf, of Oakland, California, publicly announced that ICE would be conducted sweeping raids in order to detain and deport undocumented immigrants. She based her announcement on what she claimed to be multiple credible sources that the raids would occur, perhaps within as little as 24 hours of her announcement, although she had no specific details about the raids, such as where they would occur. Schaaf emphasized that while she did not want to alarm residents of the impending raids, but wanted them to be aware of the situation, while still going about their daily lives. Her announcement included information about the obligations of school officials and business owners to protect immigrants, as well a website where immigrants could access information about their legal rights and what to do if a loved one is detained. Schaaf’s announcement came only two days after Trump threatened to pull all ICE agents out of California and other sanctuary jurisdictions. He claimed that if he did so, the state would be begging for them to return within two months. Nonetheless, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra stated that even if increased immigration raids do occur in the state, he expects all state and federal law enforcement agents to abide by California law, in terms of providing certain protections for immigrants. While immigration advocates lauded Schaaf for her actions, ICE widely condemned them, directly blaming her for some 800 undocumented immigrants in the area allegedly remaining at large. ICE’s acting director, Thomas D. Homan, characterized Schaaf’s announcement as reckless and irresponsible.
