While it is possible for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents
to apprehend an immigrant with no legal immigration status at any place
and at any time, there are places where immigration enforcement agents
are more likely to be present than others. Generally, an undocumented
immigrant should have no difficulties traveling by motor vehicle, bus,
or train, unless you traveling near a border between the U.S. and another
country, such as Canada or Mexico. Borders areas typically receive heightened
scrutiny by ICE, and you may be more likely to encounter an ICE agent
when traveling in Southern California, Arizona, or Texas, as well as near
Niagara Falls in New York. Airports are another place where there are
extra security measures in place and ICE agents are more likely to be
present. While many undocumented immigrants have flown from place to place
within the U.S. with no issues, there is a heightened risk of immigration
enforcement. In order to travel via airplane, an individual must present
a government-issued ID. A foreign passport serves that purpose, but if
immigration officials review your documents, you are at risk of detention.
If you already are in removal proceedings, however, you are free to travel
via airplane within U.S. borders. You simply will need to produce your
government-issued ID or passport, as well as a copy of your Notice to
Appear, which is the legal document indicating that immigration officials
already have interviewed you and begun the deportation process. At Landerholm
