Obamacare Repeal Bill Would Prevent Some Immigrants From Purchasing Healthcare

While the efforts of the Republican-controlled Congress to repeal Obamacare have largely failed so far, the Trump administration, as well as many Republican lawmakers, is continuing to try and find a way to make their repeal strategy work. One major problem with the proposed repeal measure is that it would prevent hundreds of thousands of immigrants from purchasing health insurance through the health insurance marketplaces. This potentially could lead to thousands of immigrants with no ability to secure insurance for themselves and their families. The Senate-sponsored bill substantially changes the eligibility requirements for participation in health insurance marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Under this bill, only permanent resident aliens and immigrants admitted for humanitarian purposes, such as refugees and asylees, would be eligible for marketplace insurance coverage. While there are a few exceptions to this general rule, the impact of the bill would be devastating for many immigrants and their families. Those immigrants who would be excluded under the Senate bill would face a dramatic reduction in the number of available healthcare options. For instance, temporary students and workers largely would go without insurance, simply because their wages are too low to afford insurance premiums. Some students may be able to access medical insurance through their universities, and more high-skilled workers might have coverage through their employers. For the vast majority of the immigrants excluded from the marketplaces, there is no other option for health insurance coverage. Proponents of the measure claim that so-called medical tourism, in which individuals move to the U.S. on a temporary basis solely in order to get subsidized medical care to deal with an illness or injury, argue that these individuals fail to remain in the insurance pool once they become healthy. As a result, the insurance market becomes increasingly unstable. Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C., has the experience that you need when you are facing deportation charges.
