Newsweek Videos Designed to Educate Immigrants About Handling ICE Raids

A recent Newsweek article highlighted the importance of all immigrants living in America to be aware of their constitutional rights in light of the increasingly hostile environment toward them created by the Trump administration. The Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated during a congressional hearing seeking a billion dollar budget increase that anyone in the country without legal status should be worried about deportation, without exception. These remarks reflected the current administration’s focus on creating a campaign of fear designed solely to alienate and criminalize immigrants in their own communities, regardless of their circumstances. These words also are illustrative of the increasingly aggressive efforts to rid the country of all immigrants, at all costs. To that end, the Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) has partnered with Newsweek to create a series of videos aimed at educating the immigrant community about how to prepare for an ICE raid. The subjects covered in these videos include the following:
  • How to figure out if you are being targeted by ICE for arrest
  • Where you are at risk for an ICE arrest
  • What situations might trigger an ICE arrest
  • How ICE tries to coerce individuals into letting them enter their homes
  • Your rights if ICE approaches you at home, on the street, or in a public place
  • What you should to do to prepare for an unexpected ICE raid, in terms of your legal documents, your finances, and your children
While knowing about one’s rights cannot always prevent an arrest, this knowledge can help you challenge a faulty arrest and protect your children from the trauma of an ICE raid. This knowledge is invaluable, particularly in light of the Trump administration’s plans to deport millions of immigrants. ICE reported a 40% increase in arrests during Trump’s first 100 days in office, as compared with the same time period in 2016. Wide-scale raids by ICE in various communities, including in several California communities, have resulted in the arrested of hundreds of immigrants. Community arrests have risen exponentially, regardless as to whether immigrants are at home, at school, in courthouses, at work, or in their vehicles.
