The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Democratic leaders have reached
an agreement with the Trump administration to provide
legal status for the Dreamers, or the participants of the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
The agreement is part of a larger package of legislation that beefs up
border security, but does not contain funding for Trump’s infamous
border wall. Trump recently issued an order that would phase out the DACA
program over the next six months, leaving 800,000 participants at risk
for deportation. In issuing this directive, Trump claimed that he was
giving Congress six months to act on legislation to create a pathway to
citizenship for the Dreamers. The agreement, announced by House Minority
Leader Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco, and Senate Minority Leader Charles
E. Schumer, New York, provides for protections from deportation for DACA.
However, White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, tweeted
a denial that funding for a border wall was removed from the legislation.
Further tweets from the White House state that Trump is open to pursuing
legislation funding a border wall separately from the legislation containing
relief for DACA recipients. Disagreement over the border wall funding
seems to be the focus of continuing arguments between Trump and the Democrats,
who have unequivocally stated that any legislation funding a border wall
is off the table. Any agreement between the Trump administration and the
Democrats on these issues would be a sharp departure from Trump’s
campaign promises. During his campaign, Trump vowed to end DACA as a part
of his larger plan to crack down on immigrants present in the U.S. with
no legal immigration status. Trump also promised to build a wall on the
U.S.-Mexican border, which Mexico would fund. Now, Trump is still insisting
that Mexico will reimburse the U.S. for the costs of the wall, while Mexican
government officials claim that they will never have any part in paying
for a border wall. Even if you are a current DACA participant, you may
be at risk for deportation. If ICE has detained you or a loved one, contacting an
experienced California immigration attorney
as quickly as possible can be essential securing a release and fighting
deportation. Taking steps to fix an immigration problem from the outset
is often much simpler than waiting until the last minute and attempting
to remedy the situation. Call
