USC Law Creates Legal Advice Project for Immigrant Students, Faculty, and Staff

In response to the increased immigration enforcement actions taken since Trump took office, University of Southern California (USC) Law has created the USC Law Student, Faculty, and Staff Immigrant Legal Advice Project (the “Project”). Law students at USC Gould are supervised by law school faculty and staff in order to answer questions for immigrants who may be at risk for deportation. The Project provides assistance to immigrants with the following different types of problems:
  • Immigrants with visas or green cards who are having difficulty returning to the U.S.
  • Immigrants seeking to renew their status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
  • Immigrants with no legal status who are in present in the U.S.
  • Immigrants whom immigration authorities have detained or at risk of being detained
  • Immigrants who are seeking to become U.S. citizens
For other immigration issues related to international students, USC already operates the Office of International Services. International faculty and staff members at USC can seek advice from Faculty/Staff Visa Services. Furthermore, the Project will conduct group presentations to student organizations or units within USC about immigration issues and immigrant rights. The Project will operate in conjunction with the USC Gould Immigration Clinic Citizenship Project (“Clinic”), which has been in operation since 2000. At the Clinic, law students and attorney supervisors primarily represent adults and children from all over the world who are seeking asylum or other form of humanitarian relief. The Clinic typically handles 80 – 90 immigration cases at all stages, including at the various levels of appeal.
