Detention Centers Fail to Provide Medical Care for Pregnant Immigrants

A recent article in The Nation describes how pregnant immigrants detained in various detention centers are not receiving necessary medical care and treatment. As a result, a coalition of immigration advocates has filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), expressing dismay at the inadequate medical care that detainees are receiving during and after miscarriage. The group further alleges that various stories by detained pregnant immigrant women have the same theme – little or no medical care and extreme stresses that lead to miscarriages. For instance, a woman who was four months pregnant and bleeding appeared at the U.S.-Mexico border back in July, where she was detained and sent to the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego. She was seeking asylum from the gang violence that her family had suffered over a period of several years in Honduras and El Salvador. Six days later, she suffered a miscarriage. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, however, claim that she was not given medical care because she was never pregnant while in their custody. Immigration advocates nationwide have expressed alarm and concern at the treatment of pregnant women being held in immigration detention centers. The number of pregnant women in this situation has increased astronomically. In the first four months of 2017 alone, ICE detained 292 pregnant women, which was a 35% increase over the same period in 2016. Plus, the coalition in its complaint points out that the number of detained pregnant immigrant women is in direct contradiction to an August, 2016, ICE memo, which stated that pregnant women normally would not be detained absent exceptional circumstances or mandatory detention.
