CA Wildfires Cause Debate About Immigration and Sanctuary Policies

The deadly wildfires in Northern California that have damaged or destroyed almost 10,000 homes have resulted in a highly public debate on immigration. Top officials from Sonoma County and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are currently sparring over immigration policy. According to ICE acting director Thomas Homan, Sonoma County’s so-called sanctuary policies left the county vulnerable to danger and crime. Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano, however, lashed back at Homan’s comments, characterizing them as inaccurate, inflammatory, and damaging to the relationship between law enforcement and county residents. Giordano also accused ICE of attacking the county with misleading statements during one of the largest natural disasters in the county’s history, which had left its residents already exhausted and vulnerable. The controversy stemmed from law enforcement’s arrest of a homeless man for felony arson after he admitted to setting a fire to keep himself warm. The man is a Mexican immigrant whom immigration officials previously returned to Mexico on two occasions. Ultra-conservative news outlet Breitbart then inflated the man’s arrest with the suggestion that he was behind the string of wildfires that have occurred in recent weeks, devastating people’s homes and claiming 40 lives. Sheriff Giordano immediately shot Breitbart’s theory down as false and completely without any supporting evidence. However, ICE director Homan shot back, alleging that although the homeless man had been arrested on four occasions over the past year in Sonoma County, and ICE had filed detainers each time, Sonoma County never notified ICE of the man’s release. The insinuation by ICE was that if Sonoma County had cooperated with ICE, then the man might have been deported before setting the fire at issue. Sheriff Giordano dismissed ICE’s allegations, however, stating that various federal courts have repeatedly found ICE’s administrative detainers to be unconstitutional.
