Volunteers Visit Eloy Detention Center

Volunteers Visit Eloy Detention Center

According to a Cronkite News Report, various volunteers from all backgrounds have come together to visit detainees at Eloy Detention Center. The privately-owned detention center located 65 miles southeast of Phoenix has been the source of constant controversy, mostly over reports of substandard medical and mental health care, as well as the fact that there have been more deaths of detainees at Eloy than at any other immigration detention center in the country. In fact, as of 2015, Eloy had nine percent of the total deaths to inmates in detention centers over the last 15 years. This is particularly the case in light of the Trump administration’s increased focus on immigration enforcement and detention. The vast majority of volunteers, many of whom are young college students, have no prior relationship with the detainees that they are assigned to visit. Many of the detainees whom volunteers have chosen to visit have no nearby family members or friends who visit them, or have only limited contact with their families. A current Eloy inmate provides the coordinator of the volunteer group with names of those detainees who receive few visits or mail from family and friends. While visits are scheduled to last one hour, detention center officials sometimes cut these visits short if there are too many people waiting in the lobby to visit detainees. For some volunteers and detainees, the visit is a struggle, either because the detainee does not trust the volunteer, or because the volunteer feels uncomfortable and helpless. One former Eloy detainee, however, states that the visits to detainees, even from unfamiliar volunteers, are important to a detainee’s mental and emotional health. Since the atmosphere at Eloy and at immigration detention centers is often one of desperation and despair, any small gesture by another to help alleviate some of the stress and otherwise routine days of detainees is generally welcome.
