In the few short weeks since he officially took office, Trump has made
good on his campaign promise to remove immigrants from the U.S. who are
increasing crime in the U.S. He spoke of the “tens of thousands”
of criminal immigrants being released into American communities, thus
necessitating the construction of a wall on the Mexican border. As present,
he has issued executive orders that temporarily restrict immigrants from
specified countries from entering the U.S. and authorize a border wall.
He has issued additional orders that prioritize the deportation of immigrants
with criminal records and slash federal funding for sanctuary cities.
The problem is that when you look at the facts about immigrants and crime,
Trump is completely wrong. Census data over the last 40 years in 200 metropolitan
areas has shown
no link between immigrants without legal status and crime rates. On the whole, immigrants commit fewer crimes than other American-born
individuals, although there always a few exceptions. Even more importantly,
large cities with significant populations of immigrants have lower crime
rates, on average, than those large cities with much small immigrant populations.
In fact, for serious crimes like murder, robbery, burglary, and larceny,
U.S. metropolitan areas with growing immigrant populations have experienced
a corresponding decrease in crime rates. This trend holds true for all
other types of crimes, except rates of aggravated assault, which increased
immigration rates did not seem to affect. There are a number of reasons
that may explain this correlation, but the most common explanation seems
to be that immigration revitalizes urban neighborhoods, builds an increased
sense of community, and generates economic growth. Whatever the reasons
may be, however, the facts are clear: immigration leads to lower crime
rates, or, at the very least, does not affect crime rates at all. Although
this study shows no link between immigrants and crime, many individuals
across our nation continue to believe and spread false facts. If you or
