About 93% of DACA Enrollees Have Applied for Renewal

New statistics show that as many as 93% of the immigrants who are currently participating in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and are eligible for renewal have chosen to do so. Since launched by the Obama administration in August, 2012, DACA has offered temporary relief to more than 728,000 young adults who have no legal immigration status. The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) estimates that DACA thus far has reached at least half of the population eligible for temporary relief under the program. Plus, as of March 31, 2016, about 63% of the eligible population has applied for DACA, which reflect the nearly 820,000 applications that are on file. MPI estimates that about another 400,000 immigrants would be eligible for DACA if they completed high school or enrolled in school. This addition to the existing DACA-eligible population raises the total to roughly 1.7 million. Furthermore, it is likely that another 228,000 children between the ages of seven and 14 could become eligible for DACA in the future. These figures suggest that further outreach about the DACA program could bring in additional immigrants who either already are eligible for DACA or who could easily be eligible for the program. The recent MPI report also found that the highest numbers of DACA-eligible individuals are concentrated in California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois, where 59% of the total eligible population lives. Immigrants from Mexico and Central America have the highest rate of DACA applications. Western states with a predominantly Mexican-born DACA-eligible population tend to have higher rates of DACA applications, as opposed to the states with the lowest application rates, which have more diverse DACA-eligible populations, in which both Mexicans and Central Americans are minorities.
